Defining "Gritty & Graceful"

Defining “Gritty & Graceful”

Gritty:

  1. containing or covered with grim.

Similar: sandy, grainy.

  1. showing courage and resolve.

Similar: courageous, persistent.

Graceful:

  1. having or showing grace or elegance.

Similar: respectful, thoughtful.

(Straight from the Oxford Dictionary.)

Caroline’s Definitions:

Grit:

  1. Dirty, imperfect. Something that can be washed clean, improved upon, or cleaned up with a little bit of work.
  2. Showing courage and resolve. Dedicated to creating the life you deserve, working for the things you want. Having the bravery and excitement to put yourself out there.

Graceful:

  1. Being thoughtful, loving, and kind to all. (And this includes yourself.) Holding yourself to an standard that doesn’t involve cheating, bullying, or manipulation.
  2. Having the dignity to ask questions, grow and learn in front of others, and still know your worth.

These words are obviously so different, yet I think they work quite well together. To own grit — to be imperfect, courageous, and hardworking — you much also own grace — thoughtfulness, dignity, and kindness. And the same is for gracefulness: to possess grace, you must possess grit.

Why Create Gritty & Graceful?

I write to express myself, to grow a portfolio, to write more consistently, to make myself proud. However, I also wanted to create Gritty & Graceful because I like the idea of having work out there for those to read. I’m sick of it filling my Google Drive, cluttering my space without any direction or audience.

I have changed dramatically in the past year, growing up very quickly as I studied abroad, made major habit changes, and learned how to live by myself. It has been a thrilling, wonderful, terrifying time as I move further away from my childhood (which wasn’t too long ago, seeing how I’m at the ripe age of 21), and towards the future I am so excited for.

Why Read Gritty & Graceful?

I love to write for work and school, and I have lots of experience creating short and exciting publications. I know I can create a Substack that’s worth reading!

When writing for myself, I write when I am overwhelmed, when I am happy, when I am scared, when I am tired. I have practiced this since I was ten.

I write when music shocks me into verbal silence, when I think I could be the next SNL writer, when I’m sick of being single. I have practiced this all through college

Because of this, Gritty & Graceful, I hope, is an honest snapshot of me. Like you, I am many things:

  • A college student
  • A sister
  • A singer
  • A daughter
  • An intern
  • A friend
  • A Christian
  • A traveler
  • A leader

And I will tell you all about these parts of my life and more…

Here I am!! (In Ireland!)

Some of My Goals:

  1. Post bi-weekly.
  2. Offer content for free.
  3. Set up a subscription plan for the next year (May 2026).
  4. Remain gritty and graceful.

Share the love, share my first post!
